‘Winschoten200’ receives subsidy from Google during the Data Center Impact Awards

Groningen – On Monday, the Data Center Impact Awards ceremony, an initiative of Google, took place in the Stadslab Groningen. Eight local organizations receive a subsidy for projects that focus on culture, science education or technological innovation in the region. The ceremony is part of the Google Data Center Community Impact Program (DCCIP).

For ten years, Google has been an important partner for regions where data centers are located. With data centers in Winschoten and Eemshaven, Google has a strong presence in the province of Groningen. The DCCIP provides subsidies to non-profit organizations that have a direct impact on the area where a Google data center is located. From all organizations that submitted an application this spring, eight Groningen projects were selected:

Ommeriek Foundation, Winschoten 200 , Primenius Educational Lab, Springplank Leek, The Dark Nearby, IMC Weekend School, Youth Education Fund and Farmers’ Nature Central Groningen

The selected projects are diverse. From an initiative aimed at the conservation of meadow birds and a local theatre project to the application of virtual reality in education and a study by the University of Groningen.

Winschoten 200
In 2025, Winschoten will celebrate its 200th anniversary as a city. To mark this special anniversary, the city will be organising a year of festive activities and events.

Making a difference together

Marco Ynema, Site Lead of Google’s data centers in the Netherlands, says :

With the Data Center Community Impact Program, we want to support innovative projects that contribute to the continued growth in Groningen and North Holland,

“We are curious to see the new ways in which local organizations use these grants to make a lasting difference in their communities.”

New application period in 2025
In 2025, Google will open a new application period for DCCIP, both in the Groningen region and in Middenmeer, Noord-Holland, where a Google data center is also located. Since 2016, Google has supported more than 80 organizations in both regions with grants from the subsidy program.
