Students explore cybersecurity at Luman Data Center – Elon University

This fall, Lecturer John Wimmer guided his Principles of Cybersecurity Management class through the Luman Data Center, offering an inside look at how companies rely on the facility’s infrastructure and services.

John Wimmer, lecturer at Elon University’s Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, took his Principles of Cybersecurity Management class to Greensboro’s Luman Data Center for a firsthand look at how secure, high-level infrastructure supports today’s digital world.

“Our students study cybersecurity best practices but seeing them implemented at a Tier 1 data center really brings those ideas to life,” said Wimmer. “They observed how physical security measures integrate seamlessly with digital safeguards, illustrating how facilities like Luman serve as the backbone for data storage, cloud services, and disaster recovery planning.”

On-site, the class examined compartmentalized secure areas, intricate fiber optic cabling, firewalls, and robust redundancy systems designed to ensure uninterrupted business operations. For many students, it was their first time seeing classroom concepts vividly come to life.
