Sime Darby Building More Data Centers For Google In Malaysia

Sime Darby Property is building more data centers for Alphabet’s Google in Malaysia as the U.S. tech giant accelerates expansion plans across Southeast Asia.

Pearl Computing Malaysia has signed an agreement with Sime Darby for the construction of additional data centers on a 77-acre site within Sime Darby’s 1,500-acre Elmina Business Park in Selangor state, northwest of Kuala Lumpur., Sime Darby Property, a unit of the Malaysian conglomerate, said in a statement on Monday.

Azmir Merican, managing director of Sime Darby Property, said in the statement.

This agreement reflects Sime Darby Property’s ability to deliver, own and lease data centers that meet the demands of the global digital economy,

The additional facilities will be constructed near the 1.7 billion ringgit ($390 million) data center Sime Darby Property is building for Pearl Computing, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Google’s Singapore-based unit Raiden APAC, on a 49-acre site at the Elmina Business Park. The project is expected to be completed in 2026.

Google has been stepping up investments in Southeast Asia, joining other global tech giants. In September, it committed to invest $1 billion to build cloud computing facilities in Thailand, on top of the $2 billion it has earmarked for projects in Malaysia.

The presence of these data centers in the Elmina Business Park enhances Selangor’s attractiveness as a key digital hub for Malaysia, buoyed by Selangor’s well-developed infrastructure, business-friendly policies and collaborative efforts of authorities.
