Mitsubishi Corp, steelmaker JFE may build AI data center near Tokyo

Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation and JFE Holdings say they will begin studies on building a data center for generative artificial intelligence.

A statement from the trading house and the steelmaker says they will run the study next fiscal year. The goal is to build the center on the site of a blast furnace in Kawasaki City adjoining Tokyo. They aim to complete the project by fiscal 2030.

Demand for data centers is growing fast. They are needed to process massive amounts of information to keep up with the boom in AI services.

The predecessor of JFE began producing steel at the plant nearly 90 years ago, but it was closed in 2023 due to price competition with overseas rivals.

Such industrial areas are now seen as promising sites to build data centers for a new wave of economic growth led by AI.
