Microsoft Invests PLN 3 Billion in a New Data Center in Poland

On Monday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk met with Brad Smith, President and Vice-Chairman of Microsoft Corporation. Following the meeting, they announced a strategic investment by the American tech giant in Poland. Microsoft will allocate nearly PLN 3 billion for the construction of a data center and the development of artificial intelligence in Poland. The investment will be completed in 2026 and will primarily enhance Poland’s cybersecurity capabilities.

Microsoft’s Strategic Investment

The Prime Minister’s recent discussions with representatives of leading global companies and their investment declarations demonstrate that Poland is a prime investment destination.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk after the meeting, said :

In these difficult and unstable times, there is a lot of hope associated with Poland and its stability. (…) Recently, we discussed investments by other companies in Poland.

“I am pleased to say that the billions of zlotys that have appeared on the horizon as a result of our previous meetings are now being confirmed—this interest in Poland and in this specific investment that Microsoft is announcing here. Microsoft’s leadership has confirmed this investment in the Mazovia region today,”

The Prime Minister emphasized that the data center—a factory of computing power—is not only crucial for cybersecurity but also for Polish scientists, managers, and startups. They will gain access to cutting-edge technologies.

In 2023, Microsoft launched the first cloud computing region in Central and Eastern Europe in Poland. It consists of three independent physical complexes—data centers—spread approximately 25 km from Warsaw.

Brad Smith, President and Vice-Chairman of Microsoft, said :

We started in 2020 when we invested a billion dollars to create a cloud region in Poland.

“That work has been completed—the cloud region was launched in 2023. Now we are announcing a $700 million investment—the second phase—which will support operations from today until the summer of 2026. We are accelerating efforts to increase computing power in Poland and this part of Europe. And then there will be a final phase,”

He emphasized that the investment in expanding computing power could have a significant impact on Poland and the entire region. Most importantly, it will be used to strengthen cybersecurity in cooperation with the Polish Armed Forces.

Bielik and PLLuM – Polish AI Solutions

Microsoft’s platform already offers the Polish language model Bielik, developed by the SpeakLeash team in collaboration with the Academic Computer Center Cyfronet AGH. It is one of the first advanced language models capable of effectively handling the Polish language and its cultural context.

Thanks to cooperation with Microsoft, the PLLuM model (Polish Large Language Universal Model) will also be made available. This advanced Polish language model leverages artificial intelligence to transform how the Polish language functions in the digital space, providing more precise and contextually relevant solutions for natural language processing.

Microsoft’s decision to support the availability of Bielik and PLLuM promotes Polish AI solutions—something that Poles can take pride in.

The Prime Minister, said :

I am very pleased that work on the Polish language model Bielik looks so promising. This project highlights the immense technical and intellectual potential of Polish scientists and IT specialists,

To ensure that Polish professionals acquire the necessary skills and maintain their competitiveness in the job market, Microsoft has also committed to training IT specialists, teachers, university lecturers, programmers, and organizational leaders.

Polish-American Relations

Prime Minister Donald Tusk also spoke about the significance of this investment in the context of geopolitics and Polish-American economic relations.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, said :

Today, global companies like Microsoft see Poland as an attractive place for investment, but also recognize their active involvement in security issues, support for Ukraine, and strengthening our country’s physical protection.

“This builds mutual trust and provides strong prospects for the future. Cooperation in such demanding areas as cybersecurity further solidifies Poland’s position on the international stage,”

He emphasized that in today’s uncertain times, with ongoing debates about a new geopolitical order and the future policy of the United States, such investments confirm the strong bilateral ties between the two countries.

March – A Month of IT Sector Meetings

Prime Minister Donald Tusk recalled that February has been a month of meetings with major global partners, mainly from the U.S., and today’s meeting with Microsoft’s Vice Chairman marks the conclusion of this series of discussions. However, this is just the beginning.

The Prime Minister announced,

March will be a month of meetings between the government and myself personally with the Polish IT sector.

“I’m talking about large Polish companies as well as smaller ones, startups, and experts and technicians,”

The meetings will be an opportunity to listen to the needs of people who drive the innovation of the Polish economy on a daily basis. They will take place at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister.
