Clemente (Merlin) advocates nuclear power to supply data centers: “It is a socially outdated debate”
According to the director, the debate on nuclear energy is “sociallyoutdated” but not “politically outdated”, while he stressed that the stabilityof the network in Spain when the new data centre projects come intooperation will require that nuclear power plants remain in operation.
The executive stressed on Tuesday during his participationin the ‘Xl Megatrends Forum: Industry and Competitiveness’ organized bythe newspaper ‘El Economista,
Today, l think that this is a socially outdated debate, not yet politically, butsocially outdated, you are going to need nuclear energy. The countries thatare leaders in this are already explaining it to you, they are alreadyexplaining it to you loudly. You can pretend not to understand it, but you aregoing to need it,
He added,
Therefore, the sooner we start putting the toothpaste we produced manyyears ago, turning nuclear energy into a political weapon, the sooner we doit, the better for everyone, because we are going to need it.
“Either that, or letothers invent it, as always. There will be other countries that will adopt itand will therefore be able to take the digital infrastructure home”
On the other hand, Clemente has also warned that the increase in energydemand due to data centres will also require an increase in investment inthe distribution network, while urging to avoid the “spirit of confrontationthat, in his opinion, surrounds these infrastructures in issues such as, forexample, their water consumption.
He said,
lt’s not that data centres consume water, that’s not true.
“They consumewater up to second generation, but the ones that are being built lately arethird generation, they are more expensive, but they don’t consume any(water). And they do consume a lot of electricity, yes, of the surplus,”
