Leak at data center / No danger to drinking water – Germany.

Last weekend, cooling water leaked out during the commissioning of a data center in the city of Offenbach in the industrial park on Lämmerspieler Weg. Some of the cooling water seeped into the soil and may reach the groundwater. It contains a low concentration of additives for corrosion protection and preservation. Two of several substances are classified as hazardous to water. There is currently no acute danger to the population.

The leak occurred in a pipe system on the roof of the data center and the cooling water from there entered the ground beneath the building via the rainwater infiltration system. The company commissioned by the building owner pumped out the leaked cooling water after discovering the incident. However, it was not possible to prevent parts of the cooling water from entering the ground. The company informed the Darmstadt Regional Council and the responsible Upper Water Authority about the incident.

In order to estimate the further consequences, the RP will have the composition of the groundwater continuously analyzed at various groundwater measuring points on the property and on the adjacent construction site. It is currently not possible to predict when the leaked cooling water will reach the groundwater due to the water flows underground in different directions. If measurement results show higher values, the city of Offenbach am Main will inform the authorities in which areas increased pollution actually occurs. The Lower Water and Soil Protection Authority of the Offenbach district and the city of Offenbach has been informed.

The drinking water in the network of the Offenbach City and District Water Supply Association (ZWO) is not affected by the incident. There are no ZWO drinking water wells installed in the affected area. The area on Lämmerspieler Weg is on the edge of a drinking water protection area for wells in the city of Mühlheim. These wells are at least 1.5 kilometers away from the location of the leak and are continuously monitored.

However, as a precautionary measure, owners of private wells are asked not to use the water for consumption or to irrigate vegetables for the time being.
