Data center project a vital opportunity for Pittsylvania County
To the Members of the Chatham Town Council and Fellow Citizens,
I want to address the concerns raised regarding the proposed data center and onsite power generation project by Balico, LLC. Open dialogue is essential, and I hope to provide clarity and context about why this project is a vital opportunity for Pittsylvania County.
Pittsylvania County’s Size and Land Use
We are the largest county in Virginia by land mass, spanning over 900 square miles. Despite this, only 0.4% of our land is currently utilized for industrial purposes. Even with the proposed 2,300-acre rezoning, this project would still leave the overwhelming majority of our land available for agriculture, residential use, and conservation. Farmland preservation is important, but so is creating opportunities that allow our families to thrive.
Existing Infrastructure
Unlike many other rural counties, Pittsylvania County already has the infrastructure needed to support this type of development. Access to highways, existing utility networks, and proximity to skilled labor makes our region an ideal location for a data center campus. This infrastructure minimizes the need for disruptive construction while maximizing the project’s economic impact.
Economic and Environmental Balance
This project will provide high-paying jobs, attract additional businesses, and generate millions in tax revenue for education, public safety, and community programs. Concerns about noise, water usage, and long-term environmental impact are valid, but Balico has committed to revising their plans to address these issues. Modern data centers are designed to operate with minimal disruption to their surroundings, and sound emissions, water usage, and other environmental factors will be closely managed.
A Brighter Future for Pittsylvania County
Our county has faced decades of economic challenges—declining population, limited job opportunities, and stagnant growth. This project is an opportunity to reverse those trends. The data center will not only provide immediate economic benefits but also position Pittsylvania County as a leader in technology and innovation for decades to come.
I urge the Town of Chatham and its citizens to remain open to this project’s potential. With thoughtful planning and collaboration, we can address concerns, preserve our community’s character, and embrace an opportunity that will secure a brighter future for us all.
