Chile – The dispute between residents of Huechuraba and Amazon over the installation of a data center in the commune
After a group of residents from the northern part of the capital presented their complaints, Amazon said that “a complaint based on mere differences of opinion cannot be accepted.”
Three residents of Huechuraba filed complaints with the Environmental Assessment Service ( SEA ) against Amazon Data Services Chile .
The reason? The claims occurred after the SEA granted the environmental permit for the construction of a data center .
Amazon and the dispute with Huechuraba residents over data center
The residents of the area aimed to “rule out the RCA , issuing a new one in its place that unfavorably rates the project or whatever is legally appropriate.”
They claim that Amazon did not consider “ environmental effects on the community and the territory ,” such as the impact of the high-voltage electrical infrastructure that will supply power to the data center or the effects of climate change.
For this reason, they requested that the company submit an Environmental Impact Study ( EIA ) to consider the externalities that the data center could cause.
According to El Mercurio , the project – which involves an investment of US$205 million – filed a petition last month requesting the SEA to reject the claims.
In this document, they maintain that “the observations of the claimants that are the subject of the appeals are duly considered in the grounds ” of the Environmental Qualification Resolution ( RCA ) approved.
Amazon also noted that,
A claim based on mere differences of opinion cannot be upheld .
They added,
It is not that the observations have not been duly considered in the grounds of the RCA, but that, in the opinion of the complainants, these are responses that do not meet their own expectations , thus expressing their disagreement with it,
