$3,6 million county incentive targets a vast data center
Miami-Dade County is poised to pay targeted jobs incentives of more than $3.6 million for development of a data center in Northwest Dade that plans to employ 27 workers at an average of $80,000 per year – an incentive that could reach $134,588 per job created.
The investment to build the center is listed at $150 million on the county-prepared legislation that commissioners will face Dec. 3.
The project, brought to the county for funding by its official economic development partnership, the Beacon Council, is code-named Apollo. The legislation does not reveal the company’s identity and it will not be made public at the time of the vote, but the legislation indicates that this is an expansion of a company already operating in the county.
A memo from county Chief Innovation and Economic Development Officer Francesca de Quesada Covey says.
Apollo’s proposed data center will provide 15MW (15 megawatts) of critical IT capacity, advancing networking, computing, and storage infrastructure crucial for Miami-Dade County’s connectivity and business operations,
The jobs would be created after Apollo constructs “a state-of-the art, two-story, 75,000-square-foot data center in unincorporated Miami-Dade County,” her memo says. Construction would begin in fiscal 2026-27.
Incentives would come from the county’s general fund over 10 consecutive years beginning in fiscal 2029-30, following a two-year employment ramp-up. Typical projects under the target jobs incentives programs are given three years to reach the guaranteed employment figure.
As is usual under this jobs incentive program, payments would come from the county only after the guaranteed job creation and capital investment.
The project is projected to produce $5.9 million in added county property tax revenue over the 10-year period.
The county memo says Los Angeles and Philadelphia are being considered as alternate sites for the center.
