2 flown to hospital after suspected fire at Amazon data center construction site near New Carlisle
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) – Two workers were flown to the hospital after a reported fire on Thursday at the Amazon construction site near New Carlisle.
The New Carlisle Fire Department says it was called just after 11:30 a.m. to the 31100 block of Edison Road on reports of two victims injured in a construction accident.
While firefighters were on their way, they received additional reports indicating that SBN AWS Building 104 was filled with smoke. When they arrived, they saw a significant amount of smoke in and around the building, and several people evacuating the area.
Officials say medics immediately began to treat two workers who were suffering from injuries. Both were airlifted from the scene due to the severity of their injuries.
Fire crews began investigating the source of the smoke, but say they found no active fire.
Meanwhile, an Amazon spokesperson tells WNDU 16 News Now there was a small fire that was quickly contained.
Amazon Spokesperson:
A small fire at the construction site of a non-operational facility was quickly contained today. Safety is our top priority, and we’re thankful to local first responders for their swift action.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Amazon Web Services began constructing the $11 billion data center last year. It’s expected to create at least 1,000 jobs.
